Ron Schaaper

Musician 11 – 21 August 2022

Ron studied at the Conservatory of Utrecht with Peter Hoekmeijer. He was a prize winner at The Princess Christina Concours and the Foundation Young Music Talent Netherlands Competition. After graduating, he remplaced the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in various Dutch professional orchestras. During this time he began his chamber music career. He played for years in the NOG Ensemble (Wind Quintet and String Quintet) and with this ensemble he played the Schubert Octet multiple times. He has also recorded a CD with the Rheinberger Nonet. Ron was part of the Euterpe Wind Quintet and the German / American ensemble Spectrum Concerts Berlin. With this last ensemble he often played the horn trios by Johannes Brahms and Robert Helps, together with Janine Jansen and Daniel Blumenthal. The horn trios by Helps were recorded with the Philharmonic of Berlin.

He attended various festivals in the Netherlands (Utrecht, Den Bosch, Kerkrade) and abroad (Sweden, Germany, USA). He became Principal Horn for the Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2002 and for the Residentie Orkest in 2004. In both orchestras he played the horn solo of Mozart’s 4th horn concerto, among others.

Ron is a permanent member of “Nieuw Amsterdam’s Peil”, this ensemble specializes in new repertoire. The ensemble often gives composition assignments to the established order of composers (Martijn Padding, Elmer Schönberger, Louis Andriessen) and to the upcoming generation (Caliope Tsoupaki, Arnoud Noordegraaf). With this ensemble, Ron often played the horn trio by Ligeti.

He is also the first horn of the Dutch Wind Ensemble, with which he regularly performs in the Netherlands and abroad. With this ensemble, Ron has recorded dozens of CDs. For several years now, he has been playing in the Orlando Quintet, that originated at the Orlando Festival in Kerkrade. The repertoire of this quintet varies from early music to modern and is specializing in arranged works. The CD “Ravelation”, entirely featuring arrangements of music by Ravel, is a good example of this.
