Shunske Sato

Shunske Sato (1984) is one of the best violinists of his generation. As of season 2018-2019 he is artistic leader of the Dutch Bach Association. His versatility and experience, both on modern and authentic instruments, form a solid basis for this position. From the very first lectern he will lead the ensemble in programmes with music by Bach and his contemporaries. He is also concertmaster of Concerto Köln and is regularly asked to lead the Freiburger Barockorchester, among others.

Shunske has been playing the violin since he was two years old and studied at the Juilliard School in New York, Paris and Munich, with Dorothy DeLay, Masao Kawasaki, Gérard Poulet and Mary Utiger.

In 2010 he won the audience prize and the second prize of the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig. He has performed with the Deutsche Oper orchestra in Berlin, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Bayerischen Rundfunks Symphony Orchestra in Munich, the Academy of Ancient Music and The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, among others. He has worked with conductors such as Richard Egarr, Christopher Hogwood, Vaclav Luks, Kent Nagano and Jos van Veldhoven.

Shunske Sato is principal study teacher in baroque violin at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He lives in the Netherlands, is married to pianist Shuann Chai and has a daughter.
