Bas Clabbers

Teacher, 11 – 21 August 2022

Bas Clabbers (b.1980) started his musical education with trumpet lessons from Jacq Sanders at the music school in Venlo. While still at high school, he studied at the preliminary division of Conservatorium Maastricht. After graduation he entered the Rotterdam Conservatorium and studied classical trumpet with Ad van Zon, André Heuvelman and Jos Verspagen. In those years he played in the National Youth Orchestra, the Netherlands Student Orchestra and the Rotterdam Young Philharmonic. He participated in master classes by Steven Mead, Malcolm McNab and Bart van Lier and enrolled in the Masters education at ArtEZ Conservatorium with Tonnie Kievits. He received his first lessons in composition at ArtEZ as well as special training in jazz and Cuban music. After his first professional years teaching the trumpet and being a conductor, Bas started in 2010 with his studies in composition and analysis with the eminent composers Wim Henderickx and Luc van Hove at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, Belgium. In 2013 he finished both master studies cum laude.

Bas is active as conductor in the amateur wind band and brass band world and as composer/arranger for wind bands and symphonic orchestras. With his composition The Elements he won the competition of the Limburg Federation for Music Societies in 2017. In 2018 his work Dulce for soprano, tenor and orchestra, was premiered in Molenbeersel, Belgium. This intense composition commemorates the victims of World War I and is based upon poems from front-line soldiers. The fist performance of his ballet Orpheus & Eurydice for harmony orchestra took place in Amersfoort in 2019. This was not only a world premiere of the work but probably also of this particular genre. Bas is since 2018 involved at the Orlando Festival as coordinator, teacher, arranger, composer and conductor.
